I bet I can eat my cookie faster than you!
“Jesus Declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35
The only way to savor the flavor of a fresh baked oatmeal cookie is to eat it slow and enjoy each bite. However, that wasn’t the case in the summer of 1957. Mom took a batch of oatmeal cookies out of the oven, handed us one cookie each. We ran through the short hallway and out the back door. As the screen door slammed Billy yelled “I bet I can eat my cookie faster than you”. The race began. Three huge bites and a big swallow and I shouted “Ha! Ha! I beat you.” “Really?” His untouched warm cookie waved in front of me and with a huge smirk on his face he teased and tormented me. “Sure is good, too bad you don’t have yours left. Your favorite, it has lots of raisins.”
The slow motion of his disappearing cookie only added to my anger. I was tricked and deprived by my older brother of something that I thought was important that hot summer day. Now some 50 plus years later I look back and say thank you brother Bill. Depression, anger and emptiness were the result of holding tightly onto my things. Material things come and go, friends move, spouses leave and family die.
Now when someone stills my favorite cookie of life I don’t get angry and I don’t chase empty dreams. Haven’t we all been tricked or abandoned by someone in our life? Where do you go when your cookies crumble or break? I run to Jesus for fulfillment of my dreams. Jesus doesn’t tempt or tease me. “Jesus Declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”
